Making a school Garden

Today my group the Iphones were busy trying to find out what project we should do for our Inquiry:Now That’s Thinking. My group was torn between the choices of making a cafeteria or making a flower garden. When we finally made our decision we decided that it would be easy to make a flower garden to help the appearance of the school when visitors come past, or when people walk past they can see what we have been working on.

For the past few weeks the Iphones have been planning and making design's about what the garden will look like when it is finished. The iphones are hoping that we can finish it before the term finish's.

Mean, Median,Mode

WALT: I will identify patterns and trends in context, within and between data sets; communicating findings, using data displays. Find the mean, median, mode and the range which is part of analysing data.
Statistics                                                           name:Sheena

WALT- Identify the mean, median and mode within a collection of data

Activity One
Answer the questions in a different colour

The definition of the mean in a statistical investigation is commonly referred to as the average. It is the total of all the data divided by the amount of data shown.
For example: if we have this range of data 3,5,7,1,2,3,6,8

3+5+7+1+2+3+6+5  = 32  = 4
             8                      8

  1. Find the mean in this set of numbers
3,7,8,4,2,6,5,4,3,9= 51 divided by 10=5.1
  1. Find the mean in the set of numbers
4,12,5,6,11,9,5=52 divided by 7=7.4
  1. Find the mean in this tally chart: 10,12,4,2=28 divided by 7=4

  1. Find the mean in this set of numbers
24,12,16,18=70 divided by 4=17.5
  1. Find the mean in this set of numbers
5,9,12,4,10,7=47 divided by 6= 7.8
  1. CHALLENGE QUESTION: Find the mean within this data, use the frequency table to help you

Activity Two
Answer the questions in a different colour

The definition of the median is the middle number within a set of numbers that have been put in order from size (biggest to smallest or smallest to biggest)
For example: 2,6,4,1,9 = 1,2,4,6,9 and the middle number is 4.
BUT say if there is more than one middle number… the median is found by taking the number midway between the middle pair of numbers:
3,6,1,4,9,2 = 1,2,3,4,6,9 → 3 + 4 = 3.5
                                             2

Find the median in these sets of numbers

  1. 10,14,17,12,19,11,16, 14 is the middle number
  2. 34,42,37,31,40: 37 is the middle number

  1. 101, 167,138,124,198,149,  143 is the middle number

  1. 54, 58,52,57,53,60, the middle number is 55.5

  1. 1001, 1094, 1023, 1065, 1038, 1027, 1042: the middle number is 1038

  1. Find the median within this tally chart

Pets owned by students
Number of students
Dogs
IIIII IIIII
Cats
IIIII II
Fish
IIII
Rabbits
IIIII III

II

The middle number from the tally chart from above is: 7

Activity Three
The mode is the most frequent number in a set of data. The number that occurs most often.
For example: In a set of numbers 3, 7, 8, 4, 2, 6, 5, 4, 3, 9 there is two modes, 3 and 4 because they appear twice in the data set.
Note- There can either be 0, 1 or 2 modes. If there are 3 or more numbers occur the same number of times, there is no mode.

Find the mode in these sets of numbers
  1. 2, 1, 5, 3, 7, 8, 5, 3 ,9 the most common numbers are 5 and 3
  2. 1, 5, 3, 2, 9 ,4, 1, 6, 8, 0, the most common number is 1
  3. 23, 45, 78, 12, 45, 67, 32, 46, 93, 12, the most common numbers are 45 and 12
  4. 101, 121, 123, 145, 167, 121, 139, 145, 176, the most common numbers are 121 and 145
  5. 394, 273, 219, 294, 183, 291, 273, 288, 271, the most common number is 273

Find the Range in these number:
  1. 32,41,37,34,40: 41-32=9
  2. 100,92,96,94,98: 100-92=8
  3. 72,79,76,74,69,80: 80-69=11
  4. 54,57,52,55,58: 58-52=6
112,125,115,111,120: 125-111=14

Marking my test helps me to improve my learning

Today in Mrs Tele'a's Maths class my group Tapaono marked our IKAN test. This time round when I did the the test it was more relaxing then last time where we had to look up at the T.V screen and try and keep up.   This time we used our chromebooks and earphones and we could do it twice to double check if we had the right answer.

The next day after we did the test we had to sit in our small group and mark our results with the teacher. I am kinda proud of my results because in some parts I made some silly mistakes and it was really challenging and now I know that next time when I do a IKAN test I have to improve myself more on fractions and place value.

I'm glad I got to see my results and even mark my work because it helps me to know exactly what I need to work on.

My fun days with the Year 7's

On Wednesday the 24th the year 8's of Pt England school went to a leadership camp for 3 days, and since the Year 8's are gone for 3 days the year 7's had the few days of fun ahead of them. Some activities that the Year 7's did was:

* Art
Wednesday: Wednesday was the first day the Year 7's had for activities, but before we could start the activites we had to sort out three groups. Here are the three groups names:
* Munchies
* Churries
* Fobalicious
My group's name was Churries and our group leaders were, Samoa and Javan. Our first activity was Making Truffles with Whare Kelly. Making the Truffles was really fun because my group made a very big mess and every team made a pile of Truffles and today we will be eating it for our shared lunch after Morning Tea.

On the last day with the Year7's we will be having a shared lunch in our classroom and watch a movie straight after morning tea, and the best part is right after lunch we will be having our prize giving for the winning group. I have really enjoyed spending time with the Year 7's.

Making Truffles

Today my group: Churries made Truffles. The ingredients that we needed to make the truffles was:
* 1x Super wine Biscuits
*1x can Condensed Milk
* 1/4 cup cocoa
* 3/4 cup choc chips
* 1 cup Desiccated coconut
When we started to make the Truffles we all started to laugh because the first step was: Crush the Super Wine Biscuits and when to started to crush the biscuits my group accidentally made a hole in the plastic bag and crumbs kept falling out. The last step which was the hardest and the messiest was when we had to make a tiny ball with the mix that we made from the biscuits and cocoa, the reason that was the hardest was that when we started to make the ball it felt lumpy and made a huge mess on our hands, but the bright side out of everything was that it tasted yummy at the end.

Here is a picture of the steps and ingredients:

Editing Writing 3

After: Today our class is taking a writing test, and the topic that we are going to write about is what is a special place in our community that is special to us.

My special place around the community is my house,  some people around the world that love they house sometimes says: There’s no place like home, and those people are right there is no place like home, I love my house very much because when my family comes to New Zealand over the Christmas holidays like from Samoa, Australia or even from France we would always treasure those moments with each other in my house. Even though my house may seem old and ugly to some people, I don’t care what they say because I love my house just the way it is.

Do you love your house? Taking care of your house is the best thing to do, because just imagine if you didn’t care for your house and made it messy you would probably get kicked out. Where would you live? Some things people do to love their house is by cleaning it, wash the dishes or maybe make the house look even better by adding some paint or decorations. Maybe starting today make yourself a challenge to clean your house, wash the dishes or help your parents to pay the housing bill’s. This would be the best way to show to your friends or family that you do care about your house.

So if you don’t want to be kicked out of your house and you love your house, then my advise would be to take care of your house by cleaning it, make every room look neat and tidy, and that’s how you show aroha to your house. That’s why I am very lucky to have a nice and cozy house. Do you feel lucky you have a house?
