Today I made a fact file about Whakaari in the coast of Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty.One thing that I learned about Whakaari is that it was owned by a family since 1936 and to the present days.

WALT: retell the story again in our own words

Aoraki and his brothers wanted to go fishing on earth.When they decided to go up to the sky Aoraki was in the important part for the karakia,but his brother interrupted him.The only part that lifted to the sky was the bow but the stern of the canoe fell into the ocean.The magic of the karakia was broken that caused the waka to turn into stone and the crew.Aoraki and his brother are now the southern Alps for Mount Cook.

1. What had Aoraki and his brothers set out to do? Aoraki and his brothers wanted to go fishing on earth
2. Explain why was Aoraki distracted while he was chanting his karakia? Aoraki was distracted by his brothers screaming.
3. Which part of the canoe was stuck in the ocean and which part launched into space? Only the bow lifted to the sky,but the stern of the canoe landed in the ocean.
4. Why couldn’t they return back to the sky? They didn’t return to the sky because they were turned into stone.
5. Explain why the brothers turned to stone,his brothers and Aoraki turned into stones because the karakia  caused the waka to turn into stone and the crew too.
6. Where are Aoraki and his brothers now? Aoraki and his brothers became the southern Alps of Mount Cook
